Boston Cyberarts Festival

What was the Festival?

The biennial Boston Cyberarts Festival celebrated a long tradition of technological and artistic innovation throughout Massachusetts from 1999 through 2011. The Festival showcased artists and high-technology professionals from around the world who use new technology to advance traditional visual and performing arts disciplines. The Festival included exhibitions of visual arts; music, dance, and theatrical performances; film and video presentations; educational programs; and lecture/demonstrations and symposia. Events took place at locations in and around Boston, including theaters, museums, galleries, artists’ studios, educational institutions, and other public spaces.

The last Boston Cyberarts Festival took place April 22-May 8, 2011.
The Boston Cyberarts Festival is the first and largest collaboration of artists working in new technologies in all media in North America, encompassing visual arts, dance, music, electronic literature, web art, and public art.

Boston Cyberarts Festival 2009

2009 festival

2009 marked the 10th anniversary of the Boston Cyberarts Festival. From April 24-May 10, 2009, fifty organizations, their curators and artists produced more than 80 events, including exhibitions, symposiums, public projections, dance performances, web art, workshops and screenings that showcased the complexity that the cross-pollination of art and technology can generate. In addition, the combination of interactive platforms, the web and digitally immersive environments generated a digital network of hundreds of artists who participated in our Festival, even if they were not physically present.

Boston Cyberarts Festival 2007

2007 festival

The 2007 Festival took place April 20 – May 6, 2007 and represented the efforts of about 60 arts and educational organizations and over 200 artists, curators and professionals who explored the impact of technology on art and how artists throughout the world are using technology to advance traditional and evolving artistic disciplines. There were 81 related events in all media including visual art, music, dance, new media, public art, performance, web art, film, lectures, discussions, and conferences that took place over a course of two weeks, at museums, galleries, universities, and in public spaces throughout the Greater Boston area and on the world wide web.

Boston Cyberarts Festival 2005

2005 festival

The 2005 Festival took place April 22 – May 8, 2005 and represented the efforts of over 60 arts and educational organizations and over 250 artists, curators and experts in new media ; all of whom produced exhibitions, performances, screenings, and/or symposia that explored the impact of technology on art and how artists throughout the world are using technology to advance traditional and evolving artistic disciplines. In addition, the Festival also consisted of approximately 70 related events in all media including: visual art, music, dance, new media, public art, literature, web art, film, lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and conferences that took place over a course of two weeks, at museums, galleries, auditoriums, and in public settings throughout the Greater Boston area and on the world wide web.

Boston Cyberarts Festival 2003

2003 festival

The Boston Cyberarts Festival is an international biennial festival of art and technology in all media. It took place April 26 through May 11 2003. The 2003 Festival included over 75 organizations and 100 programs with over 350 artists, humanists, and scientists. It featured visual and performing arts and explored how artists throughout the world are using computers to advance traditional artistic disciplines and create new interactive worlds. Many of these artists would not have the opportunity to share their work with the public or to build partnerships with cultural institutions if not for the Cyberarts Festival.

2001 festival

The 2001 Boston Cyberarts Festival, held April 21 – May 6, was an international biennial festival of art and technology and the nation’s original and largest all-media cyberarts celebration. It explored how artists throughout the world are using computers to advance traditional artistic disciplines and create new interactive worlds.

Boston Cyberarts Festival 1999

1999 festival

The 1999 Boston Cyberarts Festival, held May 1-15, was one of the largest collaborative events in the history of the arts in Massachusetts, involving over 100 events organized by 60 cultural and education institutions, including museum and gallery exhibitions and programming at the Museum of Fine Arts, The List Center for the Arts, The Museum of Science, the Computer Museum of Boston, The DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park, Danforth Museum, The Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, the Boston Art Dealers Association and numerous commercial galleries.
